In the early days of the pandemic I got into the habit of walking in my local cemetery. It wasn’t for any kind of morbid or carpe e diem reason, it was because it was quiet and calm and I didn’t have to worry about running into other humans there. In my nearby Milwaukee historic cemetery there are a great many old old trees.
When you really look at these elders you can’t help but think of what they have witnessed as the land has changed around them. You also look at the unusual branch structure of each and imagine gestural characters- much like seeing shapes in the clouds. Many of the trees have unusual holes or knots. Some like troll doors or gothic arched windows. The watercolor you see before you came from that wandering and imagining. Tree structures have since played an important roll in my images.
